Do you ever feel like something is holding you back from achieving your true potential? Chances are, it's not your skills or circumstances—it's your own limiting beliefs. These deeply ingrained convictions, often operating beneath our conscious awareness, can restrict our growth, block opportunities, and keep us from living the life we desire. But what if you could break free from these mental barriers and unlock your full potential?
Understanding the roots of these beliefs is the first step toward reclaiming your power. As a coach, I've seen firsthand how identifying and challenging these mental barriers can lead to profound personal transformation. Here’s how you can start that journey today.
What Are Limiting Beliefs?
Limiting beliefs are deeply ingrained opinions or convictions that shape our thoughts and behaviors. They can restrict our potential, hinder our actions, and close off opportunities. Typically, these beliefs stem from past experiences, societal conditioning, and fears. They act as mental barriers, preventing us from pursuing our goals, embracing change, or realising our full potential.
To break free from these constraints, we must first identify these beliefs, understand the positive intentions they were initially meant to serve, and then challenge and replace them with more empowering and constructive perspectives.
Common Limiting Beliefs:
"I'm too old to try that."
"I'm not smart enough."
"I'm afraid of trying and failing."
"I don't deserve it."
"I don't have the willpower or discipline."
"It's selfish of me to want more."
"I wouldn't be able to handle X, Y, or Z."
A Powerful Exercise to Reframe Limiting Beliefs
Now, let's dive into a practical exercise that will help you identify and replace those limiting beliefs with empowering ones. This process is most effective when guided by a coach who can provide guidance, and insight and challenge you to think differently.
Step 1: Identify the Limiting Belief
Write down the belief that’s been holding you back. Be honest with yourself.
Rate how accurate or true you believe this is on a scale of 1 to 10.
Acknowledge any feelings that arise as you reflect on this belief.
Notice if you feel any sensations in your body—such as tension or changes in your breathing.
Pay attention to any images or memories that come to mind as you think about this belief.
Step 2: Discover the Positive Intention
Consider the positive intention behind holding this belief. What has it protected you from?
Ask yourself: What has been the benefit or purpose of holding onto this belief for so long?
Reflect on what this belief has achieved for you, even if it’s been in a protective or comforting way.
Once you've recognised the positive intention behind the belief, acknowledge that it's time to let go of this outdated belief and replace it with one that better serves you.
Step 3: Redefine a New, Positive Belief
Create a new belief that aligns with the life you want to live. Imagine a trusted mentor guiding you—what would they say?
Write down this new, empowering belief and commit to it.
Make sure this belief is positive, present-focused, and aligned with the direction you wish to grow.
Real-Life Examples of Reframing Limiting Beliefs
Here are two examples that illustrate how this exercise can be applied in different situations:
Example 1: The Horse Rider's Limiting Belief
Limiting Belief: "I’m not good enough to compete at the highest level, and I’m not really an athlete or a business person."
Step 1: Identify the Limiting Belief
The rider rates this belief as a 7 out of 10. They feel anxious and self-doubtful when thinking about competing at a higher level. They notice tightness in their chest and shallow breathing when considering the idea of being an athlete or treating riding as a business. A memory of a past competition where they didn’t perform well reinforces this belief.
Step 2: Discover the Positive Intention
The belief has kept the rider in their comfort zone, protecting them from potential failure or criticism. It has also allowed them to approach riding more casually, without the pressure of treating it as a profession.
Step 3: Redefine a New, Positive Belief
The new belief could be: "I am a skilled and dedicated rider who has the potential to compete at the highest level. I am both an athlete and a business person, and I deserve to treat my passion with the respect and professionalism it requires."
Actionable Steps: The rider starts by setting up a training schedule with clear milestones, seeks mentorship from a higher-level competitor, and develops a business plan to turn their passion into a professional pursuit.
Example 2: The Career Happiness Limiting Belief
Limiting Belief:
"It’s not possible to be truly happy in a career; work is just something you have to do to make a living."
Step 1: Identify the Limiting Belief
They rate this belief as an 8 out of 10. They feel resigned and uninspired when thinking about their career. A heavy feeling in the shoulders and a slight headache emerge when contemplating work. They picture a life of endless routine, with no room for passion or joy in their work.
Step 2: Discover the Positive Intention
This belief has helped them cope with dissatisfaction by lowering expectations and reducing the risk of disappointment. It allowed them to focus on financial stability without getting distracted by the pursuit of something that seemed unattainable—career happiness.
Step 3: Redefine a New, Positive Belief
The new belief could be: "It is possible to find a career that brings both fulfillment and financial stability. I can align my work with my passions and talents to create a life where I enjoy what I do every day."
Actionable Steps: They begin researching career paths that align with their interests, network with professionals in those fields, and take small steps like enrolling in a course or attending a workshop to transition into a more fulfilling role.
