Are Your Excuses Holding You Back?

Over the past few months, I've caught myself using excuses to justify why I couldn't complete certain tasks or stick to plans I had laid out. It often took me weeks to mentally check in and question the validity of these excuses: were they genuine barriers, or was I just holding myself back?

One example was my struggle to maintain a calorie deficit for weight loss. I kept telling myself that I couldn't possibly stick to those calories because I was too active, too hungry, too busy, and had too much going on socially. When I thought about it properly, I realised these were just excuses. If I was serious about losing weight, I needed to stop the excuses and start holding myself accountable. This mindset shift, coupled with better planning, allowed me to stick to my plan and achieve my goal.

More recently, I found myself saying, "I just don’t have the time to do X, Y, or Z for my business." Again, I questioned the validity of these excuses. I knew that if I truly wanted to make it happen, I would find a way. So, I decided to get up 30 minutes earlier the next day, carving out time to complete tasks before heading to the gym. This change drastically improved my focus and time management. I've since committed to completing the tasks essential for growing my business—no excuses, just solutions.

As a Coach, my role is non-directive. I'm not here to tell clients what to do, but to highlight when their words and actions don't align and help them recognise repeating patterns. My goal is to empower clients to see beyond their self-imposed limitations and excuses.

I hope that after reading this, you reassess the stories you've been telling yourself. Ask yourself:

Are these excuses valid, or am I just making excuses?

Sometimes, the answer may be that your priorities have shifted, or perhaps you no longer want what you thought you did. Just ensure you are clear on the real answer before you give up or change your mind.

Choose solutions over excuses every time.
